Tropical Cyclone Garance has left a trail of destruction across Reunion Island in the French Indian Ocean. The storm brought torrential rain and winds exceeding 200 kilometers per hour (124 mph), leading to widespread flooding and significant damage to buildings and infrastructure.

Island Under Alert
Prior to the cyclone's arrival, Reunion was placed under a "violet alert," the highest level of warning, urging residents to stay indoors and prepare for severe weather conditions. Prefect Patrice Latron activated the alert due to the anticipated powerful wind gusts. Later, the alert was lifted, and the island returned to "red vigilance," indicating continued caution.
“This was more violent than Belal,” stated the prefect, comparing Garance to a previous cyclone that struck the island in 2024.
The Aftermath: Damage and Casualties
The true extent of the damage is only now becoming clear. Reports indicate uprooted trees, cars swept away by floodwaters, and widespread power outages. Roads have been cut off, hindering rescue and recovery efforts. Sadly, at least four people have died, and five others have been injured as a result of the storm.

The island is now focused on assessing the full scope of the damage and beginning the long process of recovery. Authorities are working to restore power, clear roads, and provide assistance to those affected by the cyclone.
Looking Ahead
The impact of Cyclone Garance serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerability of island communities to extreme weather events. As climate change continues to intensify, it is crucial that Reunion and other similar regions invest in infrastructure and preparedness measures to mitigate the impact of future storms. Further updates will be provided as the recovery efforts continue.
